Delphi was released on Valentine's day on 1995.
Your reviewer gives a humorous run down things Delphi developers might purchase over the years and suggestions what to do next...
From a different point of view:
Since majority of the Delphi developers on the newsgroups are men who are trying to find a Valentine and most of them are so broke they can't seem to save up any money to get hitched or married...
The twelve days of
On the day before Valentine, my true love asked me to help pay for:

... and I told my friend to asked her boyfriend to cut his credit card and go for debt counseling, then tell him to learn Visual C++ and ASP.NET and realize there is a wonderful life after Delphi. I told my friend if her boyfriend can't seem to pay the bills and get the latest [tools], then her boyfriend should stop the Delphi delusion.

Reviewer - you know Paul Simon's Song "50 ways to leave your lover"? One such way surely is to tell your friend that you want her to stop having fun and to start to program in C++ instead in Delphi.
Which is better -
you want to help pay for debt upon debt ...
or want to end the vicious cycle of debt?
or rather, can you help some of the people on the newsgroup get more money? some of them, strangely, are not married since 1995.
Anonymous - if the girl then does the math and finds out that instead earning money for a Prosche or a house over the years you feed the thirdparty vendors in this area - which is definitly the case. Maybe you think I am crazy, but this is the case for small teams. The difference is this high.
Delphi + thirparties is enormous effective for one man. One man cannot run a business, a business is not another kind of contract you live from.
Finally the market has decided to pay 400 - 500 EUR per seat for a tool per year at the moment. To keep it compareable the Enterprise version must be put back into the Prof. to at least stand a comparision with Visual Studio or RealBasic ...
I am not saying the other alternatives are better but they also fit and this is enough.
Wonder why on Apple they have such intersting products, maybe because having a less convenient IDE is used by more creative developers. Finally coding is 10% of the part of a product, a speedup there makes sense only if you must have shortest time to market.
There is a trap, with Delphi (because Delphi allows you to go beyond other Quick Programming solutions) and it is effective - you can write a solution and market as "product" that serves niches ... horray all the otheres do not do business there, because it does not pay... and you sit with 5000 - 1000 custerms in your niche ...
sry. 500 to 1000 customers ... in niche
Mr Hater!
>>some of them, strangely, are not married since 1995.
I think this is because they are in the newsgroups... -->> Every Jack has his Jill! Mhhh, so in a typical IT newgroup in the Windows world - this can really end up ... Every Jack has his Bill and this is finally not everybodies preference.
Good Bye Mr. Hater!
It was very interesting to listen to your words ... I wish you all the best and I hope that lots of people like your products and buy, but more important they like it.
I can say - you are a shepherd and alomst a holy man. Firm and brief you guide the sheeps away from the valley of darkness into the light of honesty brought to us by the suns of William Bunny Gate(s)keeper who sent plagues of the armageddon to the world the 7th has arrived but your words are like balsam and the tales of your herioc deeds spread from campfire to campfire when we bunnies sit together and toast our fruites in backyards frightend of the big vendor monsters.
If one day on my Linux machine a Zombie task pops up, I will kill it in remembrance of you the one who stood alone upright but finally was taken down by the hords of brainless soliders who in the name of Willam Bunny again for another decade loot honest people.
So if you hear one day tales about the Alamo Bunny - it is about you.
Cuddle the Alamo Bunny...
Bye Bye
Bunny
Or should I say buy buy:)
Hi Mike,
how are you?
The problem is not so simple and mixed...
You should see my complaints to Oracle, SAP, InstallShield Corporation, Citrix, and many other companies.
I should write of them when I have time.
Yeah, I got kicked out of one vendor's forum last week because I posted a massive 20-page bug list to them.
Got any company you'd like to mention by name?
Drop me an email and I'll see if any of them matches my list and if there's one with a massive bugs list, I'll write it here...
For instance,
Dealing with Oracle:
Your reviewer was annoyed by getting a simple sales quote for Oracle database.
How many salesman/ consultants does it take to get a quote?
It states: Phone a number on the Oracle website, leave a message, but nobody replies. Maybe it was December, so people were on leave, or maybe not-so-busy time.
Later, we called again, got an operator who asked us to leave a message. I replied with our company, phone-number to call and asking for a quote.
One week pass by, the operator says the person who we were assigned to, was on leave and back on Friday.
On next week, Monday, nobody replied. We called on Tuesday and was informed that the person who was supposed to give us a quote resigned and someone was going to give us a quote but was overseas and back on Friday.
On next week, Monday, nobody replied. We called up asking what's going on and tried to get a quote. We got a figure of around Euros 45,000 but -- if we sign-up as an Oracle partner, we could get a massive discount and other benefits.
There was five kind of Oracle partners and five kinds of plans with different benefits and costs.
Later, the person we were assigned to left for Australia for a short trip and would meet us personally.
Then came the flood in Australia and we're still waiting for a sensible quote.
Go figure....
So my last sentence!
Don't complain - don't buy. Test well and be greedy - big companies are big, because they don't spend to much on thirdparties and see their own compentence a lot more valuable. Situational exceptions apply.
One comment on Oracle ...
I am personally still satisfied, I have from the earlist days a personal licensne and a contract that allows me to access the Support portal. Honestly I store data in a few tables on the Oracle DB and I want to stay clean.
This is good, this way I can loot patches ... but not for others, just in case when someone has a problem and you need exactly the same DB to reproduce bugs.
I like Larry's manners, ... but these days Oracle Austria was tip top and the world best Oracle support center and sales office. Today they are still responsitive, have sooooo much to do .. but in the mid 90s Oracle was different - today it is sales, sales, sales ... I think Larry wants to retire and maybe sell to IBM or whatever he plans ...
The offer you describe makes no sense - you cannot be an Oracle partner and an engineering company in parallel, do one thing good and have some other things cooking ... but an Oracle partner-ship is not about cooking sthg. or brewing in the labs this is a fundamental business decision to go that way ...
Anyway if someone is seeking a good Toad clone go SQL Detective. This is company where you can say, your money goes into the product and it is more than the still very good PL-SQL Developer - because the administrators, the developers and the end user can benefit at a solid rate ... In the big vendor world the prices are so high, because in big customer companies only discounts count, the sales overhead is temendous the major portion of the products price.
I just wanted this time to add one or 2 examples that low priced products are not cheap because the do less, they simply do not have the 40 -70% in hundred overhard which is finally about 100 to 200% of the price for the plain product.
